‘VI 121’ project seeks volunteer befrienders to help tackle isolation and build confidence
Walthew House, Stockport, has launched an exciting new community initiative — VI 121 — designed to support people living with sight loss through the power of partnership and connection.
The project pairs volunteer befrienders with people who are blind or partially sighted (befriendees) to create supportive, one-to-one relationships. These partnerships aim to help reduce isolation and loneliness, while boosting confidence, empowering the individual and increase emotional wellbeing.
The charity is now seeking caring and dedicated individuals from across Stockport and Greater Manchester to volunteer as befrienders. Volunteers will take a person-centred and empowerment-based approach, offering personalised support tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.
Nina Chesworth, Project Coordinator at Walthew House, explains:
“Many people with sight loss face barriers, physical and emotional that can make it difficult to stay connected with others. Through VI 121, we want to create opportunities for meaningful partnerships, support, and empowerment — helping people feel more confident, included, and supported in their communities. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life who want to make a positive difference.”
Full training and ongoing support will be provided to all volunteers.
Rachael Zimbler, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Walthew House, said:
“It’s fantastic to see the findings from our November 2023 consultation with blind and visually impaired people now taking shape through the launch of a new VI One-to-One Project Coordinator role. I’ve been involved from the very beginning and am thrilled to see the befriending scheme start to roll out across Stockport. This service will match volunteers with individuals who may be socially isolated or need support accessing the community and services.
We’re encouraging anyone with a couple of hours to spare to consider volunteering – full training will be provided, and it’s a great way to make a real difference.
As someone who is registered blind and a lifelong Stockport resident, I’m really excited about the positive impact this will have. This is an exciting time for Walthew House as we expand our team and continue to support the local VI community.”
