Recruiting for Kitchen Cook (Monday)

Location: Walthew House

Time Commitment: Mondays, 9:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Purpose of the Role

To help create a warm, welcoming kitchen on Mondays by preparing simple meals and drinks for people attending our groups. You’ll help keep everything running smoothly and make sure everyone feels comfortable and included.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome and chat with our service users, many of whom have sight loss, hearing loss or both, offering friendly support and being mindful of individual communication needs.
  • Plan and prepare light meals, snacks, and hot/cold drinks.
  • Handle small amounts of money confidently (taking payments, giving change and recording what’s been taken).
  • Work steadily and independently once you know the routine – Mondays can be busy, so being able to get going is important.
  • Maintain high standards of food hygiene and kitchen safety.
  • Keep the kitchen organised, clean and safe, including washing up and sanitising surfaces.
  • Work with staff and volunteers to meet dietary needs and preferences.
  • Monitor stock levels and let staff know when things need replenishing.

Skills and Qualities Needed

  • Basic cooking skills and confidence in the kitchen.
  • Comfortable handling cash accurately.
  • Organised, reliable and able to keep things moving during busy times.
  • Friendly, chatty and approachable with a genuine interest in people.
  • Able to work as part of a small team and communicate well.
  • Awareness of food hygiene (training provided).

Health & Safety Responsibilities

  • Follow Walthew House’s health & safety procedures, including fire safety and manual handling.
  • Use kitchen equipment safely and report any faults or hazards.
  • Wear suitable clothing and footwear for a kitchen environment.
  • Complete a Food Safety Level 2 certificate (supported by Walthew House).

Safeguarding Responsibilities

  • Follow all safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Report any concerns about a service user’s wellbeing to the safeguarding lead.
  • Maintain confidentiality and clear professional boundaries.
  • Complete Safeguarding Level 1 training (supported by Walthew House).

Training & Support Provided

  • Food hygiene training.
  • Safeguarding training.
  • Full induction to Walthew House and how we support people with sensory loss.
  • Ongoing support from staff and experienced volunteers.

DBS Requirement

An Enhanced DBS check is required for this role. Walthew House will organise and cover the cost.
