We are very excited to share the news that a brand new book about the life of our charity’s founder, John Walthew, is now available to purchase! The book has been written by Angela Kenrick, whose late grandmother had been a Walthew House service user. The suggested minimum donation for the book is £12, with all profits being donated to our charity. They are available to purchase from Walthew House or the Heritage Centre inside St.Mary’s Parish Church in the Market Place. Read more about the book here.

Deaf awareness training delivered to Wigan Athletic Football Club’s Academy

We were delighted to be approached by Wigan Athletic Football Club to deliver a deaf awareness training session, including basic British Sign Language (BSL), as part of their Academy’s Education programme. Read more about the training session here – well done to all of the players for taking part, we hope they are able to use some of the football-related sign language on the pitch!

Upcoming dates for training sessions

We have two courses taking place here in April, which would be of interest to anyone with sight or hearing loss, their family members, or professionals who work with people with sensory loss. They are free of charge to attend.

‘Making the most of your hearing’ – Monday 17th April, 10.00am-2.00pm

‘Making the most of what you can see’ – Monday 24th April, 10.00am – 2.00pm

We often find that attendees find it useful to come along to both sessions, and refreshments will be provided. There is a car park to the rear of the building. To find out more about these courses click on the links above or call us on 0161 480 2612.

Become a Friend of Walthew House

We are extending an invitation to our wider community to become a Friend of Walthew House. Being a Friend costs just £10 a year and is a greatly valued way of supporting services for people with sight or hearing loss across Stockport. Your annual membership helps to pay for the running costs of the building, ensuring we can keep Walthew House safe and warm for the 400+ people who access our services here each week.

To become a Friend, simply complete and return the form via this link. Or, you can sign up over the phone by calling 0161 480 2612. If you return by Friday 31st March you will be automatically entered into a competition to win a pet studio photography voucher worth £95 from Joanne Photography!

Last chance to vote for Walthew House in a Tesco store near you!

Image shows the clear perspex voting box at a Tesco store, with the name Walthew House over one of the voting slots.

Voting closes on 31st March in Tesco Extra at Portwood, and 7 other Tesco Express stores across Stockport. To vote, you need to make a purchase within store of any value to receive one token, which you can then post in the voting box near the exit. We are hoping to raise funds towards our sensory loss Youth Club residential trip later this year. Thank you for your support – Every Little Helps!
